This is a common question we get, and like most things, the answer is... it depends!!
For deep surveys, or a survey that requires accurate colour representation, lights are essential. Light (especially red) is quickly absorbed under the surface, and without the addition of a light source, your imagery will be a greeny/blue colour. Lack of light will also affect the clarity of the image; with low light, many cameras will either reduce frame rate, or increase the ISO to compensate, resulting in a grainy/stuttering image. In these situations, the use of a light source is highly recommended.
If you're working in clear, sunny conditions, like a shallow coral reef, you can probably get away without lights. Similarly, if you're in very murky/turbid conditions, lights are probably more of a hindrance, as the particles in the water create backscatter and will make the image even more difficult to view.
Our Orpheus camera can be equipped with dual 1500 lumen Blue Robotics lights which can be dimmed from the surface, so you'll always have the right amount of light.
